Water filtration system

The Cambodian Ceramic Water Purifier provides a low-cost way of producing safe drinking water from contaminated sources such as open wells, ponds, canals, streams, or floodwater.

Produced by local potters, using local materials, the purifier consists of a ceramic pot with small pores that allow water to seep through but strain out micro-organisms that cause diseases. Microscopic silver particles embedded in the clay act as an anti-bacterial agent and provide an extra layer of protection.

The ceramic filter element is set into a plastic or clay receiving vessel that holds the filtered water and protects it from recontamination until it is ready to be used. Water flows through at a rate of 2 to 3 litres per hour, enough to provide drinking and cooking water for a family of six.

IDE programmes in Bangladesh , Cambodia and Nepal promote different models of water filters.
